Stralsund Maritime Museum

Stralsund Maritime Museum CAME

Renovation of the Stralsund Maritime Museum

The Stralsund Maritime Museum is one of Europe’s leading institutions for marine science. Located in the heart of the
historic old town, the museum offers fascinating insights into the underwater world – from marine biology and
evolution to fisheries and sustainability.
Following a comprehensive renovation, the museum reopened in 2025 with the aim of taking both the visitor
experience and the infrastructure to a new level.

CUSTOMER NEED

The challenge in this project was to efficiently manage visitor flows as attendance increased, without compromising
the visitor experience. Specifically, the objectives were:
To meet the museum’s architectural and design requirements

  • To strategically slow down visitor flows (chokepoint function)
  • To ensure clear visitor guidance at the same time
  • To meet the museum’s architectural and design requirements

SOLUTION ADOPTED

To meet these challenges, we developed a customized intelligent visitor guidance system. At the heart of the project
were four Bidirectional motor-powered swing-leaf turnstile Saloon 40, which were tailored to the museum’s
architectural features:

  • Customized design: To ensure seamless integration into the design concept, the housings were customcoated in a specific RAL color according to the customer’s specifications (9017 – matte jet black)
  • Custom lengths: The barrier elements were manufactured in custom lengths to optimally adapt the passage widths to the spatial requirements.
  • Visual user guidance: An integrated LED ring provides intuitive indication of the operating status, thereby assisting in visitor guidance.
  • Automatic opening: For maximum convenience and smooth passage, radar motion detectors ensure fully automatic opening of the doors upon approach.

By carefully managing visitor flow and combining state-of-the-art technology with high-quality design, we were able
to implement a solution that facilitates efficient wayfinding – without creating barriers to the visitor experience.

RESULTS AND BENEFITS

The implementation of our visitor guidance solution has yielded several positive outcomes for the museum:

  • Regulated visitor flows: The installed swing doors enable targeted control and smoothing of visitor flows.
  • Enhanced visitor experience: The barrier-free and automated passage significantly increases visitor comfort.
  • Modern visitor experience: The interplay of innovative technology and visual guidance systems creates a technology-enhanced experience that underscores the museum’s contemporary standards.
  • Symbiosis of design and functionality: The precise alignment of the custom-made solution with the museum’s architecture demonstrates that the highest functional requirements can be seamlessly combined with a sophisticated design concept.

The modernization of the Maritime Museum in Stralsund demonstrates how the strategic use of innovative access
solutions can make a decisive contribution to modern visitor guidance. The project highlights the importance of
customized systems in seamlessly integrating technology and design within a unique building.
