CAME made a key contribution to the major project to redesign Heidelberg’s Bahnstadt district with the opening of a two-storey underground car park for almost 1,600 bicycles and cargo bike. The project, which aims to encourage people to switch to bicycles, is an example of innovative urban mobility concepts.
Customer need
The challenge in this major project was to provide optimum technical access to the various access areas of the bicycle parking garage while at the same time meeting the highest standards of user-friendliness and safety. The details were:
- Efficient control and protection of the bicycle parking spaces: Tailor-made automation was required here to ensure smooth processes.
- Integration of versatile access solutions: In addition to standard traffic, cargo bikes and other special usage groups were also to be served.
- Adaptation to different usage scenarios: From the bicycle parking area to the sanitary facilities, flexible yet secure access control had to be implemented.
Solution adopted
To meet these challenges, CAME supplied and installed a modular system consisting of various components:
- BTC 300 man high turnstiles: 3 innovative BYC 300 turnstiles with an integrated bicycle lock and a side door with special dimensions for escape doors were used to control access to the bicycle areas – including special requirements for cargo bicycles. This solution enables flexible adaptation to different traffic flows.
- Automatic doors: 13 automatic doors were installed to separate the bicycle parking spaces. These not only ensure smooth access, but also contribute to the structured use of the parking area.
In a further, private bicycle room, access control was implemented via an automated revolving door. - Tripod Turnstiles with payment function: We installed two turnstiles with an integrated payment function to control access to the toilet facilities. Two further turnstiles were installed in the exit area of the bicycle parking garage to prevent access here.
The modular approach and precise coordination of the individual components ensured that the solutions could be seamlessly integrated into the overall concept of the project and met the high demands of the city of Heidelberg.
Several positive effects were realized through the implementation of access solutions:
- Optimized traffic control: the tailor-made automatic doors and turnstiles ensure smooth and safe access to the bicycle parking spaces and other areas.
- Increased user experience: The intuitive operation and the special design for different vehicle types (including cargo bikes) contribute to the acceptance of the new mobility concept.
- Sustainable integration into the urban mobility concept: Our solutions support the city’s strategy of promoting the switch to bicycles as an environmentally friendly alternative and thus making a contribution to sustainable urban development.
